I truly enjoy reading Lucy Chen’s second book – Good Moms Do Cry. It is the combination of laughter and tear of Chinese moms raising children in America. The chapter I enjoy the most is “No Piano Anymore,” pages 53-55.
My wife Olga is a private piano teacher, witnessing hundreds of families enjoying or torturing piano education of their children. Olga once says, “Most trophies in Maryland state piano competitions are awarded to Chinese American children. Yet many of these young players appear stern, rigid, and emotionally restrained. They rarely smile or shine; the music becomes a sequence of precise but lifeless notes.” I agree with Olga: our children should love music, not loathe it, eventually.
Lucy shares her struggles and successes in raising her three beautiful children. I fully agree with her: children from immigrant families should have both programs to follow and privilege to pursue their likes. These young professionals will possess life-critical skills: perseverance to academic excellence and can-do spirit to challenge the status pro.
Thank you, Coach Lucy, to share your emotional journey of parenthood as a Chinese mother.
