Lynn Z, – Middle School Student
Talk Title: "Two Steps To Digging Your Mountains"
Hi! I’m Lynn Z and I’m in sixth grade! I want to make a world where people see what they are capable of, by following two very easy steps. I chose this topic because I also struggled with this. In fifth grade I dropped out of many extra-curricular classes and could barely do anything. Therefore, I wish that with these two steps I came up with, people will push through challenges and face them with strength. First, they need to come up with an achievable, yet hard goal. Then, find the feeling of success by doing something they love.
I live in a family of five (not including my grandparents), my dad, mom, sister, me, and the pet we don’t have yet. Since I was young, I always wanted a dog that was fluffy and clumsy, but my family says it’s too much work. My sister seems to always get on my nerves and I always end up yelling at her. She does things like playing the piano while I study, crying to get me in trouble, and plays bad music on Spotify. I like to play tennis, do archery, and play many instruments. Piano and guitar are the best ones I am playing so far, but I also want to play the violin. I love public speaking but my accomplishments are not very impressive. The only things I’ve gotten with it was getting MVP (most valuable player) in a debate and getting first in reciting a story in Chinese.

Good evening.
As a parent of two children in FCPS system, I am deeply concerned and troubled by a few high school principals and leaderships intentionally, accidentally or conveniently hide, conceal and withhold awards, rewards, accomplishment and achievement of our hard-working students. These lack of transparency demoralized and demotivated our high school students, and their chance to get admitted in top tier colleges are diminished.
· I am more concerned by our school board’s light slip on the wrist over these schools just after a superfluous investigation.
· I am more concerned that we pay high property tax in this county. What we got is a degrading and downgrading education quality (see attached). Fairfax county students math, English and SAT are lagging behind other VA counties.
· I am even more concerned that county board of advisors decides a massive salary of 43% when education quality does not match up your performance on the job.
Let me ask you:
· If your own child’s award is withheld by the school, what is your own feeling?
· If your own child does not get in the college they deserve to have, does not get the scholarship they deserve to have. What is your feeling?
· If you are facing angry parents, crying students, potential lawsuit and even investigations from the State level board of education. What is your feeling?
I came to this country and county from China 20 years ago, just to pursue a happier life. When our school is failing our kids with so called equality over quality, when our colleges grant half of the STEM Ph.D.s to foreign students, when China is working on 6G technology but we are still crawling at 4G, our school is still debating to wear shirt or skirt, or which bathroom to use. You let me down deeply and completely.
You still have a chance to make a change: adopt the resolution you have received before this meeting from concerned parents in the community.
When you cannot help our children achieve, then for God’s sake, from this post, please leave. Thank you.

"Build Resilience: Believe, Rise, An Abundant Life is about building resilience to overcome life’s challenges by tapping into our innate strength.
My parents were survivors of the World War II - they were born in the 1930’s in China when Japan invaded China. Through their life, they endured countless sufferings including wars, poverty, starvation, natural disasters, family separations, and diseases. We may learn building resilience from their stories by tapping into our inner power to overcome life’s challenges and live a more abundant life."

When his family travels, he tries to find a local club to visit and encourages his kids to answer Table Topics. “It’s a great way for them to interact with professionals. They can see how Toastmasters connects people immediately from all walks of life. And we get to meet local people and get restaurant recommendations!”

Our daily time is spent with other controllers, risk officers, CFOs, all top-level people. They are busy, and they want to know what we want. So it’s important to ask the right questions, use the right tone, find the right angle. It’s all soft skills.
I think Toastmasters is a lifelong learning experience. No matter how good you are, you can always find a way to improve. It will keep you humble.
